Once you’ve acquired your water tank, the next step is planning its installation. Adhering to best practices is crucial to ensure the safety and longevity of your water storage system. Additionally, consider your intended usage, as this will determine the necessary tools and whether you will undertake the installation yourself.
Installing a water tank becomes straightforward once you’ve clarified its purpose.
Here’s a simplified procedure that I find easy to follow:
- Prepare the tank foundation – There are two options for preparing a foundation for a water storage tank: concrete and compacted material.
Concrete Foundation – Pour a 3-inch reinforced concrete slab that is perfectly level and flat in all directions, extending beyond the tank’s base dimensions. Before pouring concrete, ensure the soil base is compacted properly.
Compacted Material – Create a 3-inch pad using compacted crusher dust or road base, ensuring it extends at least 24 inches beyond the tank’s diameter. Remove any rocks, stones, or sharp objects that could damage the tank’s foundation. Thoroughly compact the base to ensure it is level and flat in all directions.
If you are replacing an old tank, this step should have already been completed. For installing a new water storage tank, ensure the base is either concrete or compacted material, larger than the tank’s base diameter, and uniformly level in all directions. This prevents future issues such as spillage.
- Install the overflow drainage pipe – If your tank was purchased from Enduraplas, the fitting may already be installed (unless otherwise specified). Connect the piping to the stormwater drainage system or direct it to a location well away from the tank’s base to prevent undermining.
Normally, the overflow is pre-installed in your new tank. However, if it’s not, there’s no need to worry as the process is simple. You’ll just need to drill a hole where you’ll insert a gasket (and sometimes a filter). Secure the fitting with screws as needed. This ensures proper water drainage, reducing the risk of foundation erosion.
- Install your roof fill pipes – Now is the time to connect the pipe from your roof to the tank lid. If you intend to use the water for drinking, we recommend consulting with your local dealer about necessary filters. Also, ensure that your filter basket is securely attached to the tank lid.
Whether your water catchment area is on the roof or near the ground, the water tank plays a crucial role in collecting and storing rainwater effectively.
Choosing the right placement for your water tank is essential to maximize its usefulness. Consider factors such as tank dimensions, property size and layout, plumbing infrastructure, and the aesthetic impact on your property when deciding where to position your water tank.
Tank Sizing
Once you’ve determined the tank dimensions, the next step is to evaluate the size and available space on your property.
Property Size and Space
Regardless of the type of tank you intend to acquire, it’s crucial to consider the available space, especially if you’re planning to install an above-ground water tank. Assessing the available space helps determine whether an above-ground tank is feasible or if space constraints necessitate an underground tank.
Aesthetic Considerations
While a water tank is essential for meeting daily water needs, some homeowners find its presence on their property undesirable. Therefore, minimizing the tank’s visibility is important.
Pipes and Plumbing Infrastructure
Optimize water storage efficiency by positioning your tank near downpipes. While this may limit placement options, it ensures optimal water collection from your property’s drainage system.
